[ Epsiode 1 ] The battle starts!! A Shadow Game

Once in Egypt, the archeologists discovered a secret tomb that no one had ever seen it before. There was a mysterious treasure kept inside a millennium-golden box. When they tried to take it out, something happened to them.

Back to Domino High School, the story starts at an ordinary boy called Mutou Yugi. During the break, he is building mountain cards. His friend tries to ask him play basketball but Yugi refuses. He is afraid that which team he is with, the team will be defeated. So, Yugi is left alone in classroom. Generally, Yugi would like to play game with his friends. He brings many games in his bag every day. Then, Yugi shows up his secret treasure, a millennium-golden box. While he is going to open the box, his classmate named Jyoonouchi takes it from him. Jyoonouchi much teases Yugi and plays throwing the box. Yugi askes for his millennium box back. Jyoonouchi tells him that he plays like a girl. So, if Yugi would like it back, he should be more aggressive like a man. Yugi shouts that he hates violence and fight. Then, Honda comes in and tells Jyoonouchi to let it back to Yugi. Jyoonouchi starts teasing Honda who is the health and welfare president of the student committee. Jyoonouchi tries to look inside a millennium box. Yugi asks him no to lose any pieces of his treasures kept in. Having seen it, Jyoonouchi closes the box and says that it is very boring. Anzu appears and takes the box from Jyoonouchi. She tells him that if it is boring, he should return it to Yugi and leaves Yugi alone. Jyoonouchi tells her back that he merely wants to teach Yugi how to be the man. Then, Miho walks into the room and says that she is hungry. Honda tells her to wait. He is going to find some food for her. Jyoonouchi also goes with Honda.

During their way, Jyoonouchi much complain about Anzu's act. He just feels annoyed about Yugi's behavior like a kid. Then both Jyoonouchi and Honda accidently bump to a student monitor named Ushio. Honda tries to shut Jyoonouchi's mouth to say nothing with this guy when he asks if they are bullying someone. Ushio tells them to button his uniform well before he leaves. Honda warns Jyoonouchi not to involve with that guy. There are many bad rumors about him.

Anzu and Yugi are talking in the classroom. She asks Yugi what is in the box. Yugi tells her to keep it as a secret. He opens the box and show her an unsolved millennium puzzle. Anzu is very impressed. This puzzle has taken a long time to be solved. Yugi got it from his game store. Yugi's grandpa, Mutou Sugoroku, intended to sell it but he changed his mind to give it to Yugi because Yugi really neened it. Also, Yugi shows the hieroglyphic characters on the box. This box was brought from Egypt. Whoever can solve the puzzle, he will be granted a wish. So, Anzu asks what his wish is. Yugi keeps it as a secret.

Jyoonouchi shows Honda a piece of the puzzle he took from the box of Yugi. Honda tells him to return it to Yugi. Jyoonouchi doesn't care what he said and reminds him that Miho is waiting for his food. Honda has just realized, so he hurries to do his work. On the other side, Miho is standing and waiting for her food with hunger. Jyoonouchi looks at the piece of the puzzle and then throws it into the water.

After school, Ushio is coaching his teams at school yard. Yugi is caught when he is walking pass his group. Ushio asks Yugi if he is being bullied by someone in class. Though, Yugi says no, Ushio tells him not to worry. He will be Yugi's bodyguard. Yugi feels weird and hurries to leave him.

Yugi reaches home and sees Anzu has been already there. She hasn't come to his store for a long time. Sugoruku, Yugi's grandpa, wonders if he has been still solving a millennium puzzle. There is a bad rumor about a curse of it. He says that whoever can solve the puzzle, he will gain knowledge of a shadow game. Anzu feels afraid while Yugi seems to be more curious. He intends to solve it and asks for a wish, no matter what.

At night, Yugi is working hard on solving the puzzle. Sugoroku comes at his door and looks at his act through the door hole. He believes in his grandson. One thing that he concerns is about a shodow game. Yugi seems to get very tired. He falls asleep on the desk. Then an incomplete puzzle is shinging.

At the following day, Ushio would like to show Yugi something. He brings Yugi behind the building. Yugi is surprised when he sees Jyoonouchi and Honda beat up. Jyoonouchi accuses Yugi if he has already pleased with this. Yugi tries to refuse. He didn't ask Ushio to perform this work. Ushio tells Yugi that punishment hasn't been finished yet. He starts beating Jyoonouchi. Yugi can't stand seeing that, so he comes in and asks Ushio to stop. Ushio asks Yugi why he doesn't do as he wants. This is a good chance to revenge persons who bullied him. Yugi tries to explain that Jyoonouchi didn't bully him. Jyoonouchi just wants him to be a man. He is also his friend. Jyoonouchi was amazed when he heard the word "friend" from Yugi. Anyway, Ushio stops his act and asks Yugi 200,000 yen for bodyguard fee. Yugi is shocked.

At home, Yugi is thinking how he can find such a lot of money while he is solving the puzzle. Though he realizes that this isn't time to solve the puzzle, he seems to solve it well today. Then, he reaches to the final piece. Yugi is shocked when he sees that the last piece is gone. He wish he has lost it at school, so he hurries to go back to school. While he is running to the building, Ushio appears to and asks if Yugi is coming to give him money. Yugi is afraid that he doesn't have much money for him and he is also in a hurry to find what he may leave it at school. When Ushio has realized that Yugi can't give him money, he thinks that he should give him some punishment.

Jyoonouchi and Honda are walking home. Honda says that Ushio is as what people talk about. Jyoonouchi looks down to the ditch where he threw a piece of Yugi's treasure there. He reminds himself about what Yugi said and did to save him. Then he jumps into the water to get it. Honda is surprised what he is doing. Jyoonouchi is happy when he can find a piece of the puzzle. Honda gives him his towel and says that despite his title as health and welfare president, he can't see his friend getting wet. Then, Honda notices that Ushio is taking Yugi to somewhere.

Behind the building, Yugi is beat and hurt. Jyoonouchi and Honda appear. Jyoonouchi comes to see if Yugi is okey. He hears Yugi saying something that he would like to ask a wish from the puzzle that he needs friend. So Jyoonouchi gives a missing puzzle back to Yugi's hand and continues attacking Ushio with Honda. Both Jyoonouchi and Honda are knocked. When Yugi gains his consciousness, he sees his friends fall down. Though, he would like to help them, his body is too weak to move. Anyway, he's realized a missing puzzle in his hand. He put the last piece to the puzzle. Something is gonna happen. A complete puzzle starts shining. A large shadow with the third eye on the forehead appears on the wall behind Yugi. The light is shinging through into the sky. Ushio turns back and hears the sound "It is time to play a game". Suddenly, he finds his body tied with a rope on the top of the dome roof. He sees Yami Yugi on the roof. Yami Yugi challenges Ushio to play a game if he would like to get money attached at the pole on the roof. Ushio agrees to his challenge. Yami Yugi starts a shadow game. He also ties himself with a rope and slide down along the dome roof with cards attached on the roof. Both Yugi and Oshio are tied together with the same rope. He explains the rule of this game. Each person picks up a card. He climbs up by numbers of paces following numbers of cards he picks up. Ushio first draws 10 while Yami Yugi draw King or 13. Next, Ushio draws 2 while Yami Yugi draw Queen or 12. Drawing is running until Yugi almost reaches the top roof if he gets another one step. Ushio has the final turn to change the game. However, he draws a jocker or 0. Turn comes to Yami Yugi. He draws 1 and finally wins. Ushio gets furious and climbs up to punch Yami Yugi. He breaks the rope linked him and Yami Yugi. Yami Yugi falls down into water. Ushio, tries to get his money but he sees that it is merely a deck of cards. Yami Yugi opens his third eye at his forehead and uses millennium power to give game punishment to Ushio. Ushio is falling into water. He thinks that he would be fine because he is falling down into water. Anyway, there are wild monsters appearing from the water and swallowing him inside their mouths. Ushio' team finds his boss trembling and crying in front of the school.

Next day, everybody knows that Ushio was taken into the hospital. Yugi is very happy to his valuable treasure, a complete millennium puzzle. Then he sees Jyoonouchi greating him. Jyoonouchi tells Yugi that he also would like to show Yugi his treasure. He lets Yugi guess. Anyway, he says that it is "something you can see, but you can't see". It is friendship between him and Yugi. Yugi seems to appreciate to his word while Jyoonouchi is getting embarrassed how he could say that. Then he tells Yugi to hurry to go to classroom by leaving one side of a shoe. Yugi is following him with his shoe.
