[ Destiny's Horizon ]
Story By Dude
[ Chapter 1: The Challenge]
(note: this takes
place before the Memory Story Arc in the Manga)
Yugi Moto read the letter again once he borded the plane. He had received a letter
three days before, as did his friend Jonouchi. It had been from the president
of Altaris Enterprises, Orlando Altaris. He was hosting a tournament of eight
duelists, in San Diego, California. The two had departed for America., with their
friends Anzu and Honda, and Shizuka, Jonouchi's sister. On the flight, they talked
about the prior Battle City Tournament, and wondered who would be at this one.
They had heard of Orlando Altaris before; he was a prominent American duelist.
They had no doubt that Seto Kaiba would be there, but as for the other four,
they could only guess.
The four arrived at San Diego Airport, and made their way to the center of Altaris
Enterprises. On the way, since the opening of the tournament was in a couple
of hours, the group decided to do a little sightseeing along the way. They met
Malik Ishtar, who had also been invited for the tournament, and he had brought
his sister Ishizu and his brother Rishid as guests. They arrive at Altaris Enterprises
on time, and find that Seto Kaiba had, in fact been invited, and had brought
his brother Mokuba along. Surprisingly, Ryou Bakura had also been invited, and
they gladly greeted the Kaibas and Bakura. There were also two other American
duelists there, which Yugi recognized as Diesel Kane and Damien Rush, both of
them good duelists. The gang discussed the tournament until the opening ceremonies,
where Orlando Altaris spoke. He explained the rules of the tournament. The rules
would be almost the same as the Battle City rules, except for a few differences:
>
Duels would be played on a 7 x 8 field where monsters summoned would be able
to move one space per turn, except on their favored terrain.
>
A deck leader is chosen for the duration of the tournament. The deck leader represents
the duelist on the field. monsters are summoned on squares adjascent to the deck
leader. Like monsters, deck leaders can move on square per turn. Each gives a
500 point bonus to monsters of its own attribute, and each has its own unique
ability. It cannot attack.
>
Level monsters that are summoned by sacrificing (level 5 and above, ritual, and
fusion) are summoned to the square of a sacrificed monster.
>
Cards that set terrain ( cards that offer effects, such as Sanctuary of the Sky
and Temple of the Kings, do not alter terrain) effect twenty squares ( a player
chooses which squares to alter.
There are a few other alterations, but those will be explained later.
The day was growing late and the sky, dark, and Altaris invited them in for dinner,
where the first round pairings would be decided. As they went in, Yugi thought, " I
must win, for my honor and pride as a duelist!"
