The arena is packed with spectators. Napoleon is overseeing matters as Manjoume and a young, spiky-haired Obelisk Blue student shuffle each other's decks.

"Manjoume-san... I'm so happy to be able to duel with you," the younger student says. Manjoume is mildly amused that someone would be so eager to come in second to him, and tells the student to push himself to the limit.

Judai, Sho and Asuka run through the halls, late for the duel. Asuka, though, muses on the fact that this duel between Manjoume and a new student was set up so quickly.

Napoleon begins introducing the duel as they enter. Manjoume, the star of the academy, will be able to return to the sparkling heights of Obelisk Blue Shold he win.

Judai thinks this is all quite cool, though Sho wonders why Manjoume got picked. Judai would be a great choice, too, after all. But Chronos steps in, contradicting him. "Temporary Principal Chronos!" "Quit it with the 'temporary,' okay? There's a profound reason for selecting Signor Manjoume..."

Chronos explains that this term, the young genius pro duelist Ed Phoenix has enrolled. This was Chronos's chance for greatness. But... in a flashback, Chronos is playing 'he loves me, he loves me not' with a flower in his office, under a picture of Ed Phoenix. Napoleon enters, and Chronos explains to him that the famous Ed Phoenix never showed up at school. Napoleon tries to tell him it doesn't matter, but Chronos is momentarily overwhelmed as the last petal ends up 'he loves me not.' But Chronos rushes over to his desk and says that if they can't have Ed Phoenix, they'll have to go with the backup plan. He holds up a poster showing Manjoume and the new student. The poster reads: 'Gokaido Houzan vs. Manjoume Jun: Star Search Duel!' Putting Signor Manjoume into this duel will be almost as good as having Ed Phoenix there.

Napoleon is aghast at the idea of an Osiris Red student starring in such a duel, but Chronos says that with the money of the Manjoume Group behind him, Manjoume could become a star regardless. So returning him to Blue would ultimately be in the school's best interest...

"...And you call that a profound reason?" Asuka asks. She, Sho, and Judai are all rather unimpressed.

Back on the duel stage, Napoleon is continuing his introductions. "And now, the challenger in this duel! The super-elite who graduated at the top of his class in our junior high: Gokaido Houzan!"

The crowd cheers for Gokaido, though Manjoume is unimpressed. Judai seems impressed that as a first year, he was able to get into Obelisk Blue because of his performance in the junior high, and Sho remarks that he's in the same position Manjoume was one year ago. Chronos thinks to himself that, though Signor Manjoume fell to Osiris Red, if he can defeat someone so like his past self, it'll be proof that his strength hasn't fallen as well.

Napoleon announces that, as the newcomer, Gokaido will have the first turn, and then tries awkwardly to get off the stage (hindered by the fact that it's taller than he is). Gokaido asks if Manjoume has any idea whey he, who was said to be the greatest duelist in junior high, has fallen down to Osiris Red.

"I didn't fall. If that annoying Judai wouldn't rise to my level, to defeat him myself, I had to aim lower, from Blue to Red!" Judai is mildly offended by that, while Sho wonders, if that's so, what's the point of a duel to return him to Blue. Manjoume continues: "But that game is finished. I'm going to beat you -- and return to Blue!" 'And,' he thinks to himself, 'I won't have to put up with Judai's idiocy any longer.'

Warrior Lady of Wasteland
Monster Card

Duel! Gokaido goes first, and summons Marauding Captain in attack mode [Marauding Captain ~ Kirikomi Taichoo - 3/1200/400: As long as this Monster remains face-up on the Field, your opponent cannot select another Warrior-Type Monster on your side of the Field as an attack target. When this Monster is Normal Summoned successfully, you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower Monster from your hand]. By its effect, he can summon one level 4 or lower monster from his hand, and so summons Warrior Lady of the Wasteland (a scantily clad swordswoman in a miniskirt and a tattered cloak) [Warrior Lady of Wasteland ~ Kouya No Onnasenshi - 4/1100/1200: When this card is destroyed as a result of battle and sent to the Cemetery, you may Special Summon 1 Earth Main-Type Warrior Sub-Type Monster with an attack strength of 1500 or less from your deck. Shuffle afterwards].

Divine Sword - Phoenix Blade
Magic Card

Manjoume is very unimpressed by such small-fry monsters. But Gokaido isn't done yet. He plays [Jeweled Sword ~ Hougyoku No Tsurugi - Equipment Magic: Increase the Equipped Warrior Sub-Type's attack strength by 300. If this card is sent to the Cemetery, draw 1 card from your deck] on Marauding Captain, raising its attack by 300 points, and [Divine Sword Phoenix Blade ~ Shinken - Phoenix Blade - Equipment Magic: This card can only be Equipped to a Warrior Sub-Type Monster. Increase the attack of the Equipped Monster by 300. If this card is in your Cemetery during your Main Phase, you can remove 2 Warrior Sub-Type Monsters from your Cemetery to return this card into your hand] on Warrior Lady of the Wasteland , also increasing her attack by 300. Judai and Sho are very impressed at him getting off two Equip Magics the first turn. Gokaido sets one card face-down, and ends his turn.

"You probably don't know this, but I've always longed for a duel with you, and always worked my hardest for it," Gokaido says. In a flashback, we see Manjoume in a maroon school uniform, mid-duel, while Gokaido, in a green uniform, watches from behind a tree. "The cards you choose, your smart strategies, your attitude of laughing in the face of criticism... show me the ultimate duel!"

Manjoume thinks to himself that the newcomer's attitude -- seeming to think himself the chosen one -- is so like how he was a year ago. He draws, and then plays X-Head Cannon in attack mode [X-Head Cannon - 4/1800/1500]. Next, he plays Graceful Charity, drawing three cards and discarding two [Graceful Charity ~ Tenshi No Hodokoshi - Magic: Draw 3 cards from your Deck, then discard any 2 cards in your hand to the Graveyard]. The first card he discards is Hell Polymer, and the second is Ojamagic. Gokaido is stunned to even see the card Ojamagic, and Manjoume explains that when it goes to his graveyard, he can search his deck for Ojama Green, Ojama Yellow, and Ojama Black, moving them to his hand. As he does so, their spirits pop up cheerfully in front of him. "You called us?" Ojama Yellow floats over beside Manjoume and says how eager he is to fight this guy, which annoys Manjoume something fierce.

XYZ Dragon Cannon
Monster Card

Gokaido, on the other hand, is shocked. Manjoume, using small-fry cards like that? Manjoume smirks and tells him to watch. He plays the magic card Ojama Get Ride! By sending the three Ojama to the graveyard, he can special summon up to three level 4 or less Machine-type Union monsters from his deck in defense mode. The Ojama Trio are shocked at this, and are sucked into the graveyard slot of Manjoume's duel disk as it takes effect. "If you're the 'super-elite,'" Manjoume says, "then I must be the ultra-super-elite! Even with trash cards like these, if they're in my hand, I can find a use for them!" He summons Y-Dragon Head and Z-Metal Caterpillar in defense mode, and then activates the XYZ transformation to turn them into [XYZ-Dragon Cannon - 8/2800/2500: Remove the required Monsters on your Field from the game in order to Special Summon this Monster (the Polymerization-Fusion card is not needed and not used). Discard 1 card from your hand to destroy 1 of your opponent's cards on the Field]. He discards two cards from his hand to activate XYZ's special effect, destroying Marauding Captain and Warrior Lady of the Wasteland . With them gone, the field is clear for a direct attack -- XYZ Hyper Cannon!

Gokaido takes full damage, dropping to 1200 life (4000-2800). Gokaido grimaces, but activates Jeweled Sword's special power -- when it goes to the graveyard, he can draw one card. He does so, and Manjoume ends his turn.

Napoleon is impressed, and Chronos, coming to sit by him, says it's to be expected. Though Manjoume's slumming it in Osiris Red at the moment, his true strength is like an origami crane... (The analogy baffles Napoleon.)

Gilford the Legend
Monster Card

Gokaido's turn. He draws, then plays Pot of Greed to draw two more cards. Looking at the two he drew, he thinks, 'It's arrived.' He activates his face-down card, Call of the Haunted, to revive Warrior Lady of the Wasteland , then equips her with Grade Sword, increasing her attack by 300 [Grade Sword - Equipment Magic: This card can only be equipped to a Warrior-Type monster. Increase the attack power of the equipped monster by 300 points. If the equipped monster is sacrificed to Sacrifice Summon a Warrior-Type monster, you can treat the 1 Equipped Monster as 2 sacrifices]. Manjoume is skeptical of yet another Equip Magic that doesn't even hold a candle to XYZ-Dragon Cannon's strength. But Gokaido sacrifices Warrior Lady of the Wasteland to summon a level 8 monster -- Gilford the Legend! Gilford, a black armored warrior with long red hair and a giant sword (and 2600 attack points) appears [Gilford the Legend - 8/2600/2000: This card cannot be Special Summoned. When this card is successfully Normal Summoned, you can equip any number of Equipment Magic cards as possible in your Cemetery onto any Warrior Sub-Type Monsters on your Field].

Wicked-Breaking Flamberge -- Baou
Magic Card

Judai wonders how that happened, and Asuka explains that when the monster equipped with Grade Sword is sacrificed, it counts as two sacrifices. Gokaido then uses Gilford the Legend's special ability -- when it's summoned, he can equip any number of Equip Magics from his graveyard to it. As he in turn equips Gilford with Phoenix Blade, Jeweled Sword, and Grade Sword, Gilford's sword changes shape and grows. Finally, from his hand, he plays [Wicked-Breaking Flamberge -- Baou ~ Hajya No Taiken - Baou - Equipment Magic: Send 1 card from your hand to the Cemetery to equip. Increase the attack strength of the Equipped Monster by 500. If a Monster Equipped with this card destroys a Monster as a result of battle, the effect of that monster is negated], discarding one card to equip it to Gilford and raise his attack points by a further 500. Gilford now stands at 4000 attack (2600+300+300+300+500: 4 equipment magic cards), and his sword is several times longer than he is tall. Gokaido laughs as he commands his attack.

episode 54 summarized by Penguin Zero

Gilford the Legend attacks XYZ-Dragon Cannon, cleaving it in half and reducing Manjoume's life to 2800 (4000+2800-4000). Gokaido ends his turn, and Manjoume chuckles. "If you couldn't at least manage this, the duel wouldn't be at all interesting."

Ojamandala
Magic Card

Manjoume draws, and plays Pot of Greed to draw two more cards. Next, he plays Ojamandala, which depicts the Ojama Trio as meditating figures in a Buddhist painted mandala [Ojamandala - Magic: You can only activate this card if a Ojama Yellow, Ojama Green, and Ojama Black are present in your Cemetery. Pay 1000 Life Points and Special Summon a Ojama Yellow, Ojama Green, and Ojama Black from your Cemetery to the Field]. He pays 1000 life points, and summons the three Ojama from his cemetery. "We are reborn!" they cheer as they emerge.

"Do you have any idea what I can do with these three runts on the field?" Manjoume asks. Gokaido says he knows, but Manjoume clearly doesn't think so. He plays Ojama Delta Hurricane. The three brothers leap forth into the air. "Yellow!" "Black!" "Green!" They dive down towards Gilford, wave and waggle at him for a moment, then press their rears together and start spinning. "Take this!" Manjoume says. "Special attack: Ojama Delta Hurricane!" The spinning band of Ojama wraps around Gilford and destroys him in a large explosion [Ojama Delta Hurricane - Magic: You can activate this card if you have a Ojama Green, Ojama Yellow and Ojama Black on your Field. Destroy all of your opponent's cards on the Field]. Gokaido drops to his knees as he realizes that three nothings like that just destroyed his mighty Gilford. But he grits his teeth and gets back to his feet, using Jeweled Sword's effect to draw another card. Manjoume sets a card face down, and Gokaido is distressed: "Please don't tell me that's another Ojama-whatever card!" Manjoume just smiles and ends his turn.

"It's true... at some point, you started using this weak, horrible deck. You... you're not the Manjoume-san I looked up to!"

"Weak? Well, if this deck is weak, it doesn't exactly say much for you that you're losing to it."

Armed Samurai - Ben Kei
Monster Card

Gokaido is furious, and draws. He plays Premature Burial, paying 800 life to summon a monster from his cemetery [Premature Burial ~ Hayasugita Maisou - Magic: Pay 800 Life points. Select 1 Monster Card from your graveyard, Special-Summon it on the field in face-up Attack Position and equip it with this card. When this card is destroyed, the monster is also destroyed]. Thus, his LP now reduces to 400 (1200-800). And he chooses Armed Warrior Ben Kei, which he had previously discarded to play Wicked-Breaking Flamberge -- Baou. Next, he activates Phoenix Blade's power -- when it's in his graveyard, he can remove two Warrior-type monsters in his graveyard from play in order to return Phoenix Blade to his hand. Removing Marauding Captain and Warrior Lady of the Wasteland , he does so, and then equips Ben Kei with both Phoenix Blade and Lightning Blade [Armed Samurai Ben Kei ~ Jyuusou Musha Benkai - 4/500/800: In addition to a normal attack, this card can attack during the same Battle Phase as many times as the number of Equip Cards equipped to this card]. Ben Kei's attack is now 1600 (500 +300+800) [Lightning Blade ~ Inazuma No Ken - Equipment Magic: You can only equip this card to a warrior-type monster. Increase the attack of the equipped monster by 800 points and decrease the attack of all Water monster on the field by 500 points].

"I'll open your eyes now!" Ben Kei attacks and destroys Ojama Yellow. Gokaido then explains that Ben Kei gets an extra attack for each card equipped to him. With the two swords and Premature Burial, that makes three extra attacks, and he uses them to destroy Ojama Black, then Ojama Green. Manjoume thinks that if he uses his face-down card, Ojama Delta Brief, now, he can block the next attack, but at the cost of an Ojama... He can't allow that! And so Ben Kei's final attack hits Manjoume directly, lowering his life to 200 (1800-1600).

"Do you understand?" Gokaido says. "Trash cards like that are worthless as a line of defense!"

Ojama Delta Brief
Trap Card

But Manjoume activates his trap -- Ojama Delta Brief!, which depicts all three of the Ojama stuffed into one pair of briefs [Ojama Delta Brief - Trap: Special Summon an Ojama Yellow, Ojama Green, and Ojama Black when they are destroyed as a result of battle from your Cemetery]. It allows him to special summon the Ojama cards that were destroyed this turn. "We are reborn!" The Ojama Trio weep with joy, at the thought that Manjoume took damage just so they could be revived together...

"The Academy was right," Gokaido says. "Osiris Red suits you! You've been reduced to using such small-fry!"

"'Reduced to?'" Manjoume asks archly.

"I've heard about Osiris Red," Gokaido smirks. "The building is crumbling, the food is terrible, the rooms are tiny, and the dorm head is a cat! And on top of that, the duelists are all trash!"

"It's true that Osiris Red is the worst, and the duelists are all trash," Manjoume says. "But I've taught them -- that the weak stay weak!" Judai and Sho are angered by this. "But by lowering myself to their point of view, I've seen things that the elite can't."

Manjoume draws and smirks. This is what he revived the Ojama Trio for. He plays Polymerization.

The three brothers leap into spiraling air. "Let's go!" Ojama Yellow says.

"The Ojama Ultimate Fusion!" Black adds.

"Here it comes!" Green concludes.

The three of them vanish, and Ojama King poses boldly. Gokaido is stunned -- zero attack points?! But Manjoume says that there are some things only these guys can do. He plays a magic card, and he and Ojama King speak its name in unison: "Change! Mecha Ojama King!" [Change Mecha Ojaman King - Magic: If an Ojama Kin is summoned to your side of the Field, you can add this card from your Deck to your hand. Sacrifice 1 face-up Ojama King on your side of the Field. Special Summon 1 Mecha Ojama King from your Deck to the Field].

Mecha Ojama King
Monster Card

Ojama King leaps into the air -- and comes down as an even more bizarre robotic version of itself. Manjoume explains that his magic card allowed him to tribute Ojama King to summon Mecha Ojama King from his deck [Mecha Ojaman King - 6/0/3000: This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card cannot be Special Summoned except by the effect of Change! Mecha Ojama King". Once per turn, you can Special Summon 1 Ojamachine Green, Ojamachine Yellow, or Ojamachine Black from your hand or Deck]. Mecha Ojama King laughs. Manjoume then explains that when Mecha Ojama King is in play, he can special summon one Ojamachine each turn. And he chooses Ojamachine Yellow!

Ojamachine Yellow
Monster Card

A bizarrely-grinning robotic Ojama Yellow pops up on the field, and lands in a froglike pose [Ojamachine Yellow - 3/0/0: When this Monster is Summoned, Special Summon an Ojamachine Token to the Field?? (If this card/token is destroyed) Damage done to this card/token's controller is reduced to 0 and 300 damage is done to the opponent]. (Both Mecha Ojama King and Ojamachine Yellow have 0 attack points.) And when Ojamachine Yellow is summoned, Manjoume can summon an Ojamachine Yellow Token that is identical to Ojamachine Yellow in every way -- including that special ability. A duplicate of Ojamachine Yellow emerges from its mouth, and then another from the duplicate's, and then another from that duplicate... Now Mecha Ojama King has been joined on the field by four Ojamachine Yellows.

Mecha Ojama King orders an attack, and the four Ojamachine Yellows leap across the field like frogs. Gokaido is stunned -- zero-attack monsters attacking his 1600-attack Ben Kei? One of them leaps up, latches onto Ben Kei's chest, and explodes. Gokaido triumphantly proclaims his victory -- but Manjoume smirks. He doesn't take damage from a battle Ojamachine Yellow was in. And when it is destroyed, his opponent takes 300 damage... Ojamachine parts shower down as Gokaido drops from 400 life to 100 (400-300).

"Once you've fallen into hell, show me how you climb back out. If you can." The three remaining Ojamachines attack, and Gokaido is defeated (100-300*3=0).

"You see? This last year hasn't been in vain! It would be impossible for you to approach my state of mind, even in a million years! You may have at the top of the junior high, but you're far below the Red duelists! You can't just look down on Red or these 'trash' cards! Remember that! For I am... Ichi!"

The crowd joins in. "Jyu!"

Asuka, Judai and Sho cheer along. "Hyaku!"

Chronos joins in, to Napoleon's bafflement. "Sen!"

"Manjoume Thunder!" The crowd goes wild, and Judai runs out to hug Manjoume.

"Manjoume! I didn't realize how much you loved Osiris Red so much!"

Manjoume looks extremely awkward. "Hang on, I didn't say that..." But the Osiris Red students are already clambering down into the arena, tossing Manjoume into the air and cheering for him. "You're wrong!" he cries, but it falls on deaf ears.

Chronos and Napoleon walk out into the arena, and Chronos smiles. "Since you love Osiris Red so much, I suppose it would be futile to take you away from it." Manjoume looks shocked at that. Chronos announces over the arena's speakers, "Everyone! Signor Manjoume has chosen to remain in Osiris Red!" The Osiris Red students cheer and say things along the lines of, 'darned right!' Manjoume, on the other hand, looks as if he has been hit between the eyes with a very large fish. Chronos grins at Manjoume's spectacular achievements, but Napoleon mutters that he'll never understand Temporary Principal Chronos.

"Hang on a second!" Manjoume yells. "You're wrong! You're wrong!"

"This is great, Manjoume!" Judai says.

"'-san' da!"

"This is great, Thunder!" Sho amends.

"That's not what I meant!"

Later, Sho is walking down the hall past Chronos's office when he hears voices inside. Napoleon is chewing Chronos out. "The whole point of this was to show off a star from this school, to show our elite training, and finally be able able to get rid of Osiris Red!" Chronos hems and haws, and Napoleon won't have any of it. "With that attitude, you'll have that 'temporary' title for as long as that place is standing!" Sho is shocked by what he's heard...

Back at the dorm, Judai is shocked by what Sho is saying -- get rid of Osiris Red? Sho is really worried by what will happen to them if that happens -- will they all be expelled? He's just starting to panic over that when the ground shakes heavily. Sho leaps to the conclusion that they're demolishing the dorm already...

Or perhaps not. Outside, Manjoume is watching a construction site that's been set up around half of the Osiris Red dorm, with the 'Man' logo of the Manjoume group on its temporary privacy walls. He looks up to see Judai and Sho, and explains that if he's going to be stuck in this place a little while longer thanks to Judai, he's going to at least remodel it into an appropriately gorgeous room for him. After a bit of wordplay about Judai misunderstanding part of what Manjoume said, Sho says that must just be what it's like to be rich.

But Judai is worried. What's going to happen to Osiris Red?

To be continued...
