On a bright and sunny day, a teenager named [Yuki Judai] is running with great haste to an entrance exam at the Duel Academy, created by Seto Kaiba. He is late on this important day, because his train was behind schedule. While passing through a park, he accidentally runs into Motou Yugi and falls to the ground. Noticing a Duel Disk and a deck, Yugi understands that Judai is a duelist. When Judai tells Yugi that he is going to take the entrance exam at the Duel Academy, Yugi gives him a card, Winged Kuriboh [Winged Kuriboh - Hane Kuriboh], and tells him that it's lucky. Before he leaves, Yugi wishes Judai the best of luck on his exam. Judai thanks Yugi for the card and continue to rush to the exam site at Kaiba Corporation.

Judai

Ahhh! I am late, I am late! Today is such an important day, but the train is still late. I'm so pumped! This is the test I have been waiting for. Gazzz! Wait for me, Duel Academy!

Ah!! Opps!

Judai hits Yugi and drops his cards/duel disk

Judai

I am sorry!

Yugi

Are you going to duel?

Judai

Ah! I am going to an entrance exam at the Duel Academy. Heee! ....and you...

Yugi gives Judai Hane Kuribo card

Yugi

It's a lucky card. It seems to want to be with you.

Judai

?? thank you.

Yugi

Try your best!

Judai

Hai!...ano...thank you very much!

The exam takes place inside a dome on a hill behind the Kaiba Corporation building. Many candidates are taking the exam on several courts while a group of testers evaluate them. On this day, the elites of the Duelist Training School [Duelist Yosei School] are running the exam of the Duel Academy for the opening of Kaiba Land. Only participants that pass can go through to the next step.

On one court, [Marufuji Sho], a feeble boy taking the exam, is attacked by a monster. Watching from the audience are [Tenjoin Asuka], [Marufuji Ryo] and [Manjyome Jun], and students from the [Obelisk Blue] dorm. Outside the exam site, registration is closing. Suddenly, Judai appears from over a fence, introducing himself as candidate number 110, Yuki Judai. He hoped he has come in time.

Judai hurries into the exam site and sees that the exam is already in progress. On one court a candidate named [Misawa Daichi] is dueling against a tester with 1900 Life Points. He has 3200 Life Points left with the monster, Blood Vorse [Blood Vorse 4/1900/1200], and a face down card on his field. He activates his trap card Ring of Destruction [Ring of Destruction ~ Hakai Rin - Trap: Destroy 1 face-up Monster Card and inflict damage equal to the destroyed card's ATK to the Life Points of both you and your opponent]. Daichi decides to destroy his Blood Vorse, inflicting 1900 damage to both players. Daichi's Life Points are reduced to 1300 {3200-1900} while the tester's Life Points are reduced to 0 (1900-1900). The tester congratulates Daichi on his victory.

Manjyome's group discusses the great performance of candidate number 1, Misawa Daichi. Manjyome doesn't seem to be concerned with Daichi's skill at all and says that there can be only one king in the Duel Academy, most likely referring to himself. Watching from afar, Judai is impressed by Daichi's great combo. Sho, standing beside him, adds that the number 1 candidate, Misawa Daichi, is certainly very strong. Judai asks what Sho means by the candidate number. Sho explains that passing the exam depends on content of the duel. Although he could win the match, he may not get recruited since he has a low level candidate number of 119. After hearing this, Judai tries to encourage him. He tells Sho that they are in the same situation since Judai's number is 110. Sho wonders if Judai is also a candidate because the number 1-100 exam group has already been evaluated.

The committee members talk about the last candidate, no.1 Misawa Daichi. While they think that everyone has already taken the exam, a committee member reports to professor [Chronos] that there is one candidate left: candidate number 110. Professor Chronos considers this candidate, Yuki Judai, a drop-out boy due to his low level number so he believes that further testing for him isn't necessary. However, the other committee members argue that Judai has a right to take the exam because he registered in time. They consider excusing his tardiness because his train was delayed. While professor Chronos tries to insist that Judai be dismissed, he gets a phone call from the school principal, [Samejima], who heard about the late candidate due to the delayed train. The Principal reminds professor Chronos of their purpose: to gather talented duelists. In other words, he would like to give Judai a chance. As he closes the line, professor Chronos becomes very irritated with the school principal, who he dubs raccoon dad (He calls him Tanuki Oyaji - Tanuki father - Raccoon dad). He thinks that the Duel Academy should be reserved only for the elite, not drop-out boys like Judai. Since he has no choice, Chronos declares that he is going to perform the examination himself. Before he leaves, a committee member reminds professor Chronos to pick up an examination deck from a box, but he doesn't want one. He is going to play with his own deck.

Daichi goes to sit in the stands. Judai admires Daichi's great dueling strength and calls him number 2 of the candidates. Suddenly, Yuki Judai's number 110 and his name are called for his exam. As Judai leaves, Daichi asks him what he meant by calling him number 2. Judai tells him that he is going to be number 1. Sho is impressed with Judai's words. Ranked at such a low number, he can't understand how Judai can be so confident.

Yuki Judai and professor Chronos introduce themselves as they prepare for the duel. Meanwhile, Manjyome's group wonders why professor Chronos himself would come down to conduct an examination. They are uncertain if a low level candidate like Judai is worthy to face such an opponent. Manjyome, however, is curious to see the outcome of this duel.

Professor Chronos announces the start of duel and presents his new version of the Duel Disk. Judai is very impressed by the new technology and asks professor Chronos if he can borrow it. Professor Chronos tells Judai to win this game first so Judai says he will do his best to win. Professor Chronos still looks down on Judai even after this enthusiastic display. Then the duel between professor Chronos and Judai finally begins.

E-Hero Featherman
Monster Card

Judai goes first. He draws a card and summons E-Hero Featherman [E-Hero Featherman 3/1000/1000 - Elemental Hero Featherman] in defense position. He then sets one card face-down and ends his turn. Professor Chronos announces the start of his turn. His card automatically comes out for him (Perhaps this is a new system set up on his Duel Disk). Judging from Judai's monster, professor Chronos determines that Judai is playing an [Elemental Hero Deck]. He reflects on how he is going to teach Judai how wide this world is. He plays the magic card Confiscation [Confiscation ~ Oushuu - Magic: Pay 1000 Life Points to look at your opponent's hand. Select 1 card and discard it to the Graveyard] which brings his Life Points down to 3000 (4000-1000). Thanks to Kaiba virtual technology, professor Chronos is able to look at Judai's hand through virtual card images that appear before him. Looking at Judai's cards, professor Chronos says that they are deserving of the drop-out boy's deck. This insult angers Judai as he loves his cards. Professor Chronos decides to send Judai's [Monster Reborn - Shisha Sousei] to the graveyard. He then sets two cards face-down and plays the magic card Heavy Storm [Heavy Storm ~ Ouarashi - Magic: Destroy all Spell and Trap Cards on the field] from his hand. As a result, Judai's face down trap card [Drain Shield] is destroyed as are professor Chronos' face down trap cards Statue of the Wicked [Statue of the Wicked- Ougon No Jyashin Sou: When this face-down card is destroyed and sent to the graveyard, special summon 1 Wiched Token (Fiend/Dark/4/1000/1000) in attack or defence position on your side of the field.]. Judai tells Chronos that his face-down cards are destroyed as well. However, this is exactly what professor Chronos wanted to do. Suddenly, two Wicked Tokens [Wicked Token ~ Jyashin Token – 4/1000/1000] appear on professor Chronos' side of the field.

Sho doesn't understand why monsters appeared out of nowhere. Therefore, Daichi explains the effect of the trap card: [Statue of the Wicked ~ Ougon No Jyashin Sou - Trap: When this face-down card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, Special Summon 1 Wiched Token (Fiend/Dark/4/1000/1000) in Attack or Defense Position on your side of the field.]. Meanwhile, Manjyome's group is discussing professor Chronos' [Medieval Shadow Deck ~ Ankoku No Jyussei Deck]. They believe that no other type of deck can defeat it. Asuka feels sorry for Judai as he must face such a powerful opponent. Ryo thinks that Judai must not know about professor Chronos' legendary card.

Antique Gear Golum
Monster Card

Professor Chronos hasn't finished his turn yet. Judai doesn't seem to be worried at all and is actually enjoying the duel. He is curious to see what professor Chronos is going to show him next. Chronos sacrifices the two Wicked Tokens and summons Antique Gear Golem in attack position. [Antique Gear Golem - 8/3000/3000: This card cannot be special summoned. When this card attacks with an ATK that is higher than the DEF of your opponent's Defense Position monster, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent's Life Points. When this card attacks, your opponent cannot activate any Spell or Trap cards until the end of the damage step] Asuka sees that it is the legendary rare card Ryo was talking about. Judai is surprised by the great monster Antique Gear Golem with 3000 attack points.

episode 1 summarized by Janime

Instead of being frightened, Judai is impressed by the great monster. The audience watching the duel shares the same feeling. They are simply amazed by professor Chronos' legendary rare card. Professor Chronos commands Antique Gear Golem to attack E-HERO Feather Man. This means Judai's Life Points go down to 2000 (4000+1000-3000). Even so, Judai seems fine. He really likes the fact that professor Chronos is playing against him seriously. Professor Chronos is very annoyed by Judai's reaction. He thinks that the drop-out boy means nothing to the Duel Academy.

Judai declares that from now on he plans to show his real strength. As he is about to draw a card, he hears Kuriboh's voice. He wonders where this voice could be coming from. Judai draws and he gets Winged Kuriboh. He understands that the voice he heard was of the lucky card that Yugi gave him this morning. Winged Kuriboh winks at Judai. He decides to trust it, so he summons it to the field in defense position, sets two cards face-down and ends his turn.

E-Hero Burst Lady
Monster Card

Professor Chronos sees Judai's Winged Kuriboh and calls it trash (Sako - small fish/weak monster; Kaiba usually says this word). It is now professor Chronos' turn. He thinks that this turn should be the last and commands Antique Gear Golem to attack Winged Kuriboh. Although Winged Kuriboh is destroyed, Judai's Life Points do not decrease. Professor Chronos asks how can this be possible; Judai's Life Points should be reduced to 0 due to Antique Gear Golem's effect. Judai explains Winged Kuriboh's special effect. [Winged Kuriboh ~ Hane Kuriboh - 1/300/200: When this Monster is destroyed in Battle, all Battle Damage is reduced to 0 for this turn.] Asuka is surprised that there is a card that professor Chronos doesn't know about. As Judai places Winged Kuriboh in his graveyard, professor Chronos calls the monster's effect trash. Judai says he can't forgive professor Chronos for insulting his friend that gave up its life to protect him. Judai activates his face-down trap card Hero Signal [Hero Signal - Trap: You can only activate this card if a Monster of yours is destroyed as a result of Battle and sent to the Graveyard. Special Summon 1 Monster with HERO in its name from your deck.]. This is the precise reason why Judai played Winged Kuriboh. Because Kuriboh was destroyed, Hero Signal allows Judai to special summon Elemental Hero Burst Lady [E-HERO Burst Lady - 3/1200/800] onto the field. Professor Chronos then ends his turn.

E-Hero Flame Wingman
Monster Card

It is now Judai's turn. He draws and gets the magic card Skyscraper. He now has three magic cards in his hand: Skyscraper, The Warrior Returning Alive, and Polymerization. He starts by playing the magic card The Warrior Returning Alive [The Warrior Returning Alive ~ Senshi No Seika - Magic: Select 1 Warrior-Type monster in your Graveyard and return it to your hand.]. Judai picks E-HERO Feather Man and summons it to the field in attack position. He states that he is now going to show the true form of his Elemental Hero. He then plays the magic card Polymerization [Polymerization ~ Yuukou - Magic: Fuses 2 or more Fusion-Material Monsters to form a new Fusion Monster.] to fuse E-HERO Burst Lady and E-HERO Feather Man into Elemental Hero Flame Wingman. Judai's monster fills everyone with awe. However, Sho is worried because Elemental Hero Flame Wingman (2100 ATK) still has fewer attack points than Antique Gear Golem (3000 ATK). Daichi tells him not to worry. If Judai really believes he can be number 1, he must be able to do something else. Sho reminds Daichi again that Judai is number 110, a low level duelist.

Skycreaper
Magic Card

Although Judai was able to summon a stronger monster through fusion, professor Chronos tells him that the situation still hasn't changed. His Antique Gear Golem is still stronger. If Judai is going to beat him, he'll have to do better than that. Judai says that in order to win, a hero needs its own battle stage. He then plays the magic card Skyscraper. Suddenly, many buildings appear on the field, turning it into a city. Judai commands E-HERO Flame Wingman to attack Antique Gear Golem. Professor Chronos says that his monster is still stronger. Believing that the hero always wins, Judai explains Skyscraper's special effect. [Skyscraper - Field Magic: When a Monster with [Hero] in its name battles a Monster with a higher ATK, increase that Monster's ATK by 1000 points.]. E-HERO Flame Wingman's attack points rise to 3100 (2100+1000). It attacks Antique Gear Golem with Skyscraper Shot. E-HERO Flame Wingman turns into a being of flame and disintegrates professor Chronos' Antique Gear Golem. Chronos' Life Points descend to 2900 (3000+3000-3100). Judai then explains E-HERO Flame Wingman's effect. [E-HERO Flame Wingman - 6/2100/1200: This card can only be special summoned by fusion summon. When this card destroys and sends a Monster to the graveyard in battle, do damage equal to the attack strength of the monster destroyed to your opponent.]. This means professor Chronos receives 3000 damage from Antique Gear Golem's 3000 attack points, so his Life Points go down to 0 (2900-3000). Judai is victorious. He tells professor Chronos that he really enjoyed the duel.

Professor Chronos is furious because he was defeated by a drop-out boy. The audience can hardly believe that professor Chronos lost. Manjyome is shocked while Asuka thinks that Judai is a very interesting boy. Sho is also glad that Judai won. Jumping up in victory, Judai takes out his Winged Kuriboh card. From now on, it is going to be his good partner.

Judai

I won! What a nice duel, professor!

P.Chronos

Why, why...I... that drop-out boy...

Manjyome

I can hardly believe this. Professor Chronos was defeated by the candidate.

Asuka

That boy is very interesting, isn't he!

Sho

Great job, number 110!

Daichi

He may become a great rival...who knows?...no. 1

Judai

Yach! I won! From now on, I am counting on you, partner!

to be continued...
