Neo Domino City VS Satellite
This series starts by two distinguishable cities. One is a gorgeous and hierarchical society named [Neo Domino City]. High-class residents are called to be chosen people to live here. Another city is an old-structure and unorganized city called [Satellite], which is located on a solitude island not far from Neo Domino City. Satellite is a plant that handles all trashes transferred from the residents in Neo Domino City and recycles them. It's nothing rather than a factory where low-class people live. People who live in Satellite are called [Satellite Scum].
These two cities are completely separate and monitored by securities. They are linked only by the undersea pipeline that is used to transfer trashes from the city to Satellite plant. Satellite Scums are just a labor who can't escape from the factory in order to migrate into Neo Domino City.

Satellite Scum Left Behind
Yusei, Taka, Blitz, Rally, Nerve, are all Satellite residents. Because they are separate from the city, they have no idea how much the city has been developing. Yusei has knowledge about machines and computers, so he usually hacks into the security system to watch duel broadcasting. There, people have realized that a duel has developed into a new era called [Riding Duel]. All duelists are riding a vehicle called [D-Wheel] and they are called [D-Wheeler]. In this riding duel, a new rule called [Master Rule] is applied. In order to build up everyone's dream, Yusei assembles a D-Wheel by himself with anything he can gather at Satellite plant, amazing his gang by riding it to summon his ace card, [Stardust Dragon].
The story begins when Jack, who used to be a member of this gang and lived in Satellite with everyone, stole Yusei's D-Wheel and Stardust Dragon card. He rode Yusei's D-Wheel to escape from Satellite through the undersea pipeline linking two cities together. After that, Jack turned pro and became the king of the riding duel, leaving all of his friends behind at Satellite and forgetting his gloomy days over there. In order to follow Jack and get back the precious card, Yusei has to assemble a new vehicle, which is his current [Red D-Wheel]. The gang helps and supports him in order to avoid being arrested by the security at Satellite and escape from this place to go after Jack successfully.
New Power of Stars
In this series, a new of stars called [Synchro Summon] is introduced. There are some conditions required to summon a Synchro Monster, and the main condition is played with the level of stars. One concept is that tuner monster and non-tuner monsters must together be materials for a Synchro Monster. The second concept is that the levels of the material monsters must add up to the level of Synchro Monster to be summoned. This concept is called by Yusei to be a new power of stars. When Yusei is about to do a Synchro Summon, he normally declares to tune a tuner and non-tuner monsters together. The following statement is an example of Yusei's words commonly said in most of his Synchron Summons:
"I tune Speed Warrior with Junk Synchron. Clustering stars will call a new force, become a path its light shines upon. Synchro Summon, come on, Junk Warrior!"

Main Plot of the Story
Like the previous series that must be related
to some ancient mysteries, Yu Gi Oh 5D'S doesn't go away
from this plot. Although this series comes with new
technology in the modern world, the mysteries are related to
the ancient era that haven't been solved for thousand years.
What is different in Yu Gi Oh 5D'S is that it picks up the
mystery of Inca as the main plot of the story. Many
artifacts displayed in this series are real and well known
to the world. Their origins haven't been resolved, and that
is what Yu Gi Oh 5D'S tries to create a main plot. Some
people may be familiar with the artifacts in Yu Gi Oh 5D'S
that also appear in famous Hollywood movie: Indiana Jones
the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull released in May 2008. The
difference is that Yu Gi Oh 5D'S main plot isn't with the
aliens as shown in the movie but a mysterious dragon called
[The Crimson/Red Dragon ~ Akaki
Ryu].
The Crimson Dragon (God) VS Nazca Lines (Evil)
As Yu Gi Oh 5D'S has run for a couple episodes,
we have been able to find out some figures well known to the
world. One of them is [Nazca
Lines], mysterious lines in various shapes of animals
located in Peru. In our real world, it has been unknown who
actually created the lines, and there are variously unique
belief about them. A common rumor is that aliens created
them, and that is presented in the movie, Indiana Jones the
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Anyway, how is it related to
Yu Gi Oh 5D'S?
 |
 |
The Crimson Dragon |
Nazca Lines |
Yu Gi Oh 5D'S applies Nazca Lines as representation of
gods. They create the story of ancient people 3,000 years
ago and call them [People of
the Stars]. These ancient people worship the stars as
gods called [The Star of Dragon].
Their leader is also called to be [The
King of the Star Dragon]. The king has responsibility
to pray for the red star in the sky at the top of [Sanctuary
of the Sky]. When the red star shines, the king
understands that it's a message from the god. He then
transfers this message to people. This is the way their
civilization has been developed: through the guide of the
red star.
Anyway, the world is still disturbed by wicked threats.
The king prays for the Star of Dragon for salvation, and
the star responds to him again. The star sends the Crimson Dragon, the embodiment of god, to seal
the incarnation of an evil left in the earth. This evil has been
sealed under Nazca Lines. In reality, there are different
hundreds of shapes in Nazca Lines, and most of them are the
shapes of animals like birds or lizards. They are the perfect form of
a monster that Yu Gi Oh 5D'S tries to present when it is unsealed.
5D'S & Singers
To summon the Crimson Dragon to fight the evil under
Nazca Lines isn't easy. Only 5 chosen people called [Signer]
with a dragon mark on their bodies can perform this job. The
group that has attempted to search for these people is
called [Yliaster] leaded by Rex
Goodwin. Rex is trying to look for the 4 chosen people with a
dragon's birthmark. Each mark represents a part of the Crimson
Dragon. The Dragons and the Signers which are the theme of this
Yu Gi Oh 5D'S series as following:

In sum, Nazca Lines represent evils sealed in the earth
that may be incarnated someday. Only 5 Signers with dragon
marks on their bodies can summon the Crimson Dragon to fight
the evils. Yliaster currently presented as Neo Domino City's
public maintenance bureau is actually the group searching
for the 5 Signers.
You may see that the story doesn't seem to be related to
Duel Monster games highly advanced in this series.
Nevertheless, a duel is still the main battle as usual.
Because the story mainly focuses on the power of the stars
that ancient people worships, the duel is presented to have
connection with the power of the stars. That's Synchro
Summon as described earlier.
DARK SIGNERS
The first part appears to introduce Signers and gives the background of the main story on Neo Domino City and Satellite. The battle is based on the Signers to show their power and back stories. Part 2 comes with their main enemy that the Signers have to fight against.
The concept of Yu Gi Oh 5D'S is mainly on Nazca Lines, well-known and mysterious drawings in Peru. These lines are variously used in the backgrounds and patterns in the animation such as logos and character's costumes. However, as earlier described, there is no real connection between Nazca Lines and the animation. Yu Gi Oh 5D'S just applies the concept of Nazca Lines into duel monsters. There are about 70 drawings of Nazca Lines found in shape of animals: spiders, killer whales, monkeys, birds, etc. They are the perfect shapes of monsters to be used in the animation.
In Yu Gi Oh 5D'S, the 5 Signers have each part of the Crimson Dragon as a birthmark on their arms. They all represent 1 monster. Although the animation makes its original picture look like a Nazca Line, there is no such a dragon Nazca Line drawing in the real world. The Crimson Dragon therefore is a generated monster in the animation. Nevertheless, [Dark Signers] who are the enemies of Signers have a birthmark based on actual Nazca Line drawings. Unlike Signers to have a part of the dragon as a birthmark, they individually have 1 birthmark that represents a monster or a Nazca Line drawing.
Who is a Dark Signer? An answer that has already been given in anime is that a Dark Signer is a dead person. They means they have already been dead by some reason. The boss of the Dark Signers is Rudger who was once an assistant of Dr. Fudo, Yusei's father and is also Godwin's big brother. The others are Demak, Misty, Carly, Kiryu, and Bommer. Each has personal rage and compassion on an individual Signer.
NEW POWER OF THE STARS - DARK SYNCHRO SUMMON
Similar to the first part, new power called [Dark Synchro Summon] is introduced in the second part. [Dark Synchro Monsters] is the result of this summon. It presents the mirror or the evil side of Synchro Summon. In Dark Synchro Summon, everything is backward and dark. Tuner monsters have a new name [Dark-Tuner Monster] or [DT] identified on a card. Instead of adding the levels of the stars, the levels are subtracted. The level of a non-tuner monster is a base number and must be subtracted by the level of the Dark-Tuner monster.
In addition, Tuner monsters normally have lower level (If you are going to add 2 or three things to get a level of a Synchro monster, the level of all monsters should be low to be added up to a high-level monster). However, Dark-Tuner monsters normally have very high level. Why? explanation is that all Dark Synchro monsters have negative level with stars on the left side of the card not the regular right side. Dark-Tuner monsters are use to subtract the level of the base Non-Tuner monsters. In order to have the negative result, the subtraction must be higher (basic match), so the level of Dark-Tuner monsters are normally higher.
The theme of Dark Synchro Summon is that the door of the underworld is opened to the world without light. Darkness covers the light.

EARTHBOUND GODS
These gods represent main monsters against the synchro monsters of the Signers. Each god has standard effects and its unique effect. It requires only 2 monsters as tribute. In anime, when an Earthbound God is about to be summoned, human's souls besides the Signers will be sacrificed for an Earthbound God to descend to earth. Many city and Satellite people including Yusei's friends fall victim into this summon.

Your opponent cannot select this card as an attack target. This card can attack the opposing player directly. When this card is Normal Summoned, you can return up to 3 other cards you control to the Deck. Afterward, your opponent randomly discards cards from their hand equal to the number of cards you returned, and this card gains 1000 ATK for each card discarded by your opponent.
Note: An Earthbound God seems to have the ultimate effects of all monster effects. OCG and anime effects are slightly different to the extent that there is no "This card is not affected by your opponent's Magic or Trap card effects" in OCG effect. Anyway, these ultimate effects are truly powerful if an Earthbound God is attacking in battle phase. If there is only an Earthbound God on the field during the opponent's battle phase, the ultimate effects of an Earthbound God can protect itself from being an attack target but they don't protect the player. That means the opponent can declare a direct attack to the player because an Earthbound God can't be targeted. A good sample is in [Episode 46] when Yusei can catch this point and has his Stardust Dragon attack Rudger directly as Earthbound God, Uru can't be targeted for attack.
In sum, the ultimate effects strongly have both positive and negative sides. They are powerful when an Earthbound God is attacking but also powerless to protect the player as the opponent can declare an attack to the player directly.

NAZCA LINES
Each Earthbound God represents a true Nazca Line drawing in Peru as following:
The Spider

Rudger is the boss of Dark Signers who owns the spider's birthmark. In reality, it is a common and well-known drawing as it matches a real spider inserted in a network of straight lines. Its measure is about 150 feet in length, which is formed by one continuous line. The actual Spider Nazca Line has one leg longer than the others. Anime presents this figure without any alteration.
The Owl Man or Astronaut

Kiryu is the possessor of this birthmark. It has a shape of a human. In the actual Nazca Line drawing, it represents the 98 feet feature located in the focus on the small hill near the third center. It was discovered by Eduardo Herran in 1982 and often called Astronaut. In anime, it is widely called a "Giant".
The Hummingbird

Carly is the possessor of this birthmark. It's one of the most impressive drawings in Nazca Lines. The Hummingbird is 93 meters (310 ft) in length.
The Lizard

A world-class model like Misty appears to be the owner of this lizard birthmark. In Peru, the Lizard is a tragedy of the Nazca Plateau. When the government of Peru decided to build Panamerican highway, they paid little attention to these irreplaceable geoglyphs and built the highway right through the middle of this symbol and cut it in half. The permanent vehicle marks damages it beyond repair and makes the lizard very difficult to see. Thus, don't be surprised if you see some weird lines crossing the body of the Lizard. They are actually a road.
The Monkey

Demak is the owner of this Monkey drawing. The Monkey is one of large Nazca Line drawings. Its size is about 55 meters. It has three toes, with four fingers on one hand and five on the other.
The Killer Whale

Bommer is made into a Dark Signer by Rudger. He appears to be a Dark Signer who owns the Killer Whale's birthmark. This depiction of a killer whale is one of many huge drawings of animals and geometric shapes. Its size is about 65 meters.
The Condor
